Henna has been used since antiquity to dye skin, hair, and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool, and leather. The part of the plant that is responsible for that burgundy coloring is lawsone, a dye present in the plants leaves. When applied to the skin or hair, lawsone reacts with proteins, resulting in a semi-permanent stain. The lighter your hair, the more henna will stain.
