Babies get the iron they need from their mothers during the last trimester of pregnancy. When your baby is born, assuming she went full term, she has enough iron stored to last her until about the age of four months. Babies born prematurely may not have adequate iron stores to last them this long. While many moms begin introducing solid foods (which are a source of iron) around the four-month or six-month mark, others prefer to exclusively breastfeed for awhile longer. If that s the case, your pediatrician may recommend you give your baby an iron supplement. The Institute of Medicine recommends 11mg of iron per day for babies 6 to 12 months old.
